2010 ICDD Clinics Summary

Practical X-ray Fluorescence Clinic

The Practical X-ray Fluorescence Clinic was held 3 – 7 May 2010. The faculty for this workshop included John A. Anzelmo, Anzelmo & Associates, Inc.; Larry Arias, Bruker AXS, Inc.; Richard Bostwick, SPEX SamplePrep LLC; Larry Creasy; and Mary Ann Zaitz, IBM Microelectronics. Also, Dave Coler, PANalytical; Rich Phillips, Thermo Scientific; John Patterson, Bruker Elemental; and Michael Rider, Bruker AXS, were available to give instrument demonstrations.

The course consisted of lectures in the morning and workshops were held in the afternoon. In the evenings, optional sessions were held at the host hotel, which consisted of demonstrations, lectures, and Q&A sessions. The optional sessions also gave students the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the faculty members.

ICDD granted Hiram Michel-Castillo from the University of Texas at El Paso, TX a tuition waiver which covered his registration cost for the XRF clinic.

X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinics – Session I & II

The Fundamentals of X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – XRD I was held 7 – 11 June 2010. The faculty consisted of Thomas N. Blanton, Eastman Kodak Company; Cyrus Crowder, ICDD; Timothy Fawcett, ICDD; Suri Kabekkodu, ICDD; W. Frank McClune, ICDD; Fangling Needham, ICDD; Susan L. Quick, The Pennsylvania State University; Joel Reid, ICDD; Mark Rodriguez, Sandia National Laboratories; Earle R. Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; and Charles Weth, ICDD .

Two students received tuition waivers for the Fundamentals of XRD session. Brian Bates from Tennessee Technological University, Cookeville, TN was granted a waiver, as well as Edwin Walker of Southern University and A & M College, Baton Rouge, LA.

Advanced Methods in X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – XRD II was held 14 – 18 June 2010. The course was instructed by Cyrus Crowder, ICDD; Timothy Fawcett, ICDD; C. Foris, ForChem; Suri Kabekkodu, ICDD; James Kaduk, Poly Crystallography Inc.; Fangling Needham, ICDD; Susan L. Quick, The Pennsylvania State University; Earle R. Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; and Charles Weth, ICDD. The attendees were also fortunate to have Madhana Sunder, Bruker AXS; and Akhilesh Tripathi, Rigaku Americas demonstrate and discuss their instruments.

Two students also received tuition waivers from ICDD for Advanced Methods. Brian Jaques of Boise State University, Boise, ID received a waiver; Sanjay Mishra from the University of Memphis, Memphis, TN received one as well.

The format for XRD I & II consisted of lectures, recitations and workshops. Both clinics kicked off the week with a welcome reception on Monday evening.
