Practical X-ray Fluorescence Clinic

The Practical X-ray Fluorescence Clinic was held 2 – 6 May 2011. The faculty consisted of John A. Anzelmo, Anzelmo & Associates, Inc.; Larry Arias, Bruker AXS, Inc.; Richard Bostwick, SPEX SamplePrep LLC; Larry Creasy; and Mary Ann Zaitz, IBM Microelectronics. Instrument demonstrations were also given during the week by the following: Kimberly Halkiotis, PANalytical (Epsilon); Monet MacGillivray, Olympus Innov-X (Handheld Analyzer); Rich Phillips, Thermo Scientific (Quant'X); and Michael Beauchaine, Bruker AXS, Inc. (TXRF - S2 Picofox).

Each morning, instructors gave lectures, followed by workshops in the afternoon. Optional sessions were held in the evenings at the host hotel, which consisted of demonstrations, lectures, and Q&A sessions. Throughout the week, students were given ample opportunity to speak one-on-one with the faculty members about the course material.

X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinics – Session I & II

The Fundamentals of X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – XRD I was held 6 – 10 June 2011. The clinic faculty included Thomas N. Blanton, Eastman Kodak Company; Cyrus Crowder, ICDD; Timothy Fawcett, ICDD; Suri Kabekkodu, ICDD; W. Frank McClune, ICDD; Fangling Needham, ICDD; Susan L. Quick, The Pennsylvania State University; Joel Reid, ICDD; Mark Rodriguez, Sandia National Laboratories; Earle R. Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; and Charles Weth, ICDD. Also two instrument representatives, Lori Fields, Rigaku Americas (Mini-Flex II) and Jon Giencke, Bruker AXS, Inc. (D2 Phaser), gave demonstrations and answered attendees’ questions.

ICDD granted two tuition waivers for XRD I registration fees. Stanton Ching from Connecticut College, New London, CT and Victor Emmanuel Alvarez Montaňo from Sonora University, Mexico each had the opportunity to attend the clinic on behalf of ICDD’s tuition waivers.

Advanced Methods in X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – XRD II was held 13 – 17 June 2011. Attendees were instructed by a team of faculty which included Cyrus Crowder, ICDD; Timothy Fawcett, ICDD; C. Foris, ForChem; Suri Kabekkodu, ICDD; James Kaduk, Poly Crystallography Inc.; Fangling Needham, ICDD; Susan L. Quick, The Pennsylvania State University; Earle R. Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; and Charles Weth, ICDD.

Heba Abourahma from the College of New Jersey, Ewing, NJ received an ICDD tuition waiver, which covered registration fees for XRD II.

XRD I and XRD II clinics followed the same format of lectures, recitations and workshops. Each clinic started off with a Welcome Reception at the host hotel on Monday.
