III. Approval of Minutes of the 2005 March Meeting
G. Johnson moved to approve the minutes. There are no objections, so the minutes are approved by a ruling of consensus.

IV. Review of Mission Statement
The Education Subcommittee shall be responsible for developing educational materials, implementing workshops, audio-visual programs, and special sessions at meetings concerned with the acquisition and utilization of diffraction data with emphasis on the PDF and its manual and automated search/match systems. Also, it encourages the teaching of powder diffraction methods in educational institutions.

The Education Subcommittee will be responsible for assembling information about X-ray safety and providing lists and links regarding software tools for powder diffraction and X-ray fluorescence.

V. Old Business

A. XRD & XRF Clinics

A report was given by L. Mooney regarding the 2005 clinics. A copy of the Power Point presentation, which includes statistics for both clinics. G. Johnson commented on the importance of the pre-evaluation of the students, and customizing the content of the clinic in response to the pre-evaluations. C. Segre asked if a graph of information regarding attendance of past clinics was available. T. Maguire responded that she did have that information on file, and that she will give the information to him after the meeting.

B. Educational Events

A report was given by T. Maguire regarding the 2005 Denver X-ray Conference, PPXRD Symposium (Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction), and various ICDD sponsored workshops. A copy of the Power Point presentation, which includes statistics for all the events.

VI. New Business

A. APS Powder Diffraction Summer School

B. Toby gave an overview of the weeklong “ Rietveld College ” that he is planning for the spring or summer of 2007 (academic hiatus). The course is being organized by B. Toby and A. Wilkinson, and they are soliciting for ICDD participation. Also being planned is an online course, “Streaming Medias – How to find info on the web” for people who can not make the trip to Argonne National Laboratory.

B. Education Summit

J. Kaduk spoke regarding the Education Summit that he attended. The main function of the summit was to set up criteria for crystallography education. A pamphlet was created which includes the curriculum guidelines, for varying levels of students. C. Segre summarized that the basic recommendation is that more training and education is needed.

C. Honorarium for clinic instructors

G. Johnson stated that there has been no increase in honorarium for clinic instructors since 1991.

G. Johnson motions that the ICDD increase the honorarium for XRD & XRF clinic instructors from the current $150/day level.

D. Curriculum of Rietveld Workshop

J. Faber discussed his plans for the upcoming hands-on Rietveld Workshop to be held in the computer lab of ICDD. Instructors will include J. Kaduk, S. Kabekkodu, and F. Needham. G. Johnson volunteered his services for the workshop. J. Faber stated that the course will use the GSAS because it is free and everyone will be able to use it.
