Minerals Subcommittee Agenda and Minutes

APPROVED MINUTES
Minerals Subcommittee
March 16, 2005
4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
P. Heaney, Chairman

1. Call to Order and Introductory Remarks:

The new chairman of this committee is Peter J. Heaney ( Penn State ) and the acting secretary is Andy Roberts (GSC).

2. Approval of the 2004 March Minutes:

Minutes were approved unanimously.

3. Board of Directors' Liaison Report:

Evgeny Antipov reported that the mechanism for implementing cross referencing mineral names with synonyms currently exists at headquarters. Synonyms of mineral names are put in the name field as “also called” and these are searchable.

4. Report from Mineral Task Group:

Andy Roberts reported that the task group ( Andy Roberts, Andrew McDonald, Ann Sabina, Larry Bernstein) met at headquarters on June 15-16, 2004 and reviewed 96 potential mineral patterns for inclusion in Set 55 of the PDF. In addition, the task group met by conference call (along with Frank McClune, Lisa Lanno and Terry Kahmer ) on September 13, 2004 to review the results of an additional 16 patterns. In all, 78 experimental mineral powder patterns will be added to Set 55 of the PDF.

5. Report from Zeolite Task Group:

Cyrus Crowder reported that this task group met in June 2004 at headquarters and reviewed 48 patterns, of which 17 were rejected and 5 patterns replaced. This group also reviewed 960 names of zeolites from powder data calculated from ICSD data. Cyrus intimated that the zeolite task group will meet again this June 2005.

6. Report of Corrections to Mineral Powder Diffraction File:

Peter Bayliss has been reviewing the 2001 edition of the mineral PDF (silver) book and he has encountered several thousand potential changes which should be corrected in the master PDF. Some examples of these are as follows:

-Chemical formulas do not charge balance

-New unit cell and axial ratio data

-Discovery of new mineral groups and isostructural minerals

-New measured density data

-Intensity conversion problems

-Mineral name changes to comply with IMA

-Discovery of duplicate patterns

-Wrong or incomplete experimental conditions

-Corrections and additions to the structure type

-Changes in hkl's based on new crystal structure information

It is proposed to bring Peter Bayliss to headquarters in June 2006 to discuss and implement these changes during the regular mineral task group meeting. A motion (see below) was approved by Pete Wallace and seconded by Evgeny Antipov and was carried unanimously.

7. Other Business:

The upcoming PDF 4+ product (due in Sept 2005) will incorporate about 1000 mineral powder patterns generated from the Linus Pauling File (LPF). These new patterns will have to be reviewed.

8. Adjournment:

Meeting adjourned at 4:42 p.m.

Submitted by acting secretary Andy Roberts.

Motion:

The Minerals Subcommittee recommends to the Technical Committee that ICDD allocate up to $7,000 to finance an extended Mineral Task Group meeting for June 2006 to consider corrections to the mineral PDF as proposed by Peter Bayliss.

Background synopsis:

Peter Bayliss has been reviewing the 2001 edition of the Mineral PDF book and has encountered several thousand potential changes which should be corrected in the master PDF. Some examples of these are as follows:

  • Chemical formulas do not charge balance
  • New unit cell and axial ratio data
  • Discovery of new mineral groups and isostructural minerals
  • New measured density data
  • Intensity conversion problems
  • Mineral name changes to comply with IMA
  • Discovery of duplicate patterns
  • Wrong or incomplete experimental conditions
  • Corrections and additions to the structure type

-Changes in hkl's based on new crystal structure information

The financial allotment is intended to cover the expenses of bringing Peter Bayliss to ICDD from Australia and to extend the normal Mineral Task Group meeting by a couple of days.
