Minerals Subcommittee Agenda and Minutes

APPROVED MINUTES
Minerals Subcommittee
March 22, 2006
3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
C. Hoffmann, Chairperson

1. Call to Order and Introductory Remarks:

The new chairperson for this subcommittee is Christina Hoffmann (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) and the acting secretary is Andy Roberts (GSC emeritus).

2. Approval of 2005 March Minutes:

The motion to approve the March 2005 meeting minutes was moved by Andy Roberts, seconded by Cyrus Crowder, and carried unanimously.

3. Board of Directors' Liaison Report:

Evgeny Antipov reported that our motion from 2005 was approved by the Board of Directors but was not implemented, since the dates given in the motion were for a future fiscal year. There was nothing else to report.

Motion: Antipov moved that ICDD allocate up to $7K to finance an extended Mineral Task Group meeting for June 2006, to consider corrections to the mineral PDF as proposed by Peter Bayliss.

Background synopsis: Peter Bayliss has been reviewing the 2001 edition of the Mineral PDF book and has encountered several thousand potential changes which should be made in the master PDF. Some examples of these are as follows:

•  Chemical formula do not charge balance
•  New unit cell and axial ratio data
•  Discovery of new mineral groups and isostructural minerals
•  New measured density data
•  Intensity conversion problems
•  Mineral name changes to comply with IMA
•  Discovery of duplicate patterns
•  Wrong or incomplete experimental conditions
•  Corrections and additions to the structure type
•  Changes in hkl's based on new crystal structure information

(The financial allotment is basically to cover the expenses of bringing Peter Bayliss to ICDD from Australia and to extend the normal Mineral Task Group meeting by a couple of days.)

This motion will be built into next year's budget. Headquarters will inform Heaney, Chair of the Minerals Subcommittee.

Response: Executive Director - This budget allocation was built into the Technical Committee funds for 2006-07 with oversight by the Technical Committee Chairman.

4. Report of Zeolite Task Group:

Cyrus Crowder reported that this task group, which consists of Cyrus, Susan Quick and Mike Bennett, met in June (2005) and reviewed approximately 150 experimental and calculated powder patterns. They identified structure types, determined proper nomenclature and recommended against accepting entries into the PDF which they consider to be duplicates (approximately 1/3 of reviewed patterns). They plan to meet again in June (2006) at headquarters and request funding for travel expenses. A motion (#1 attached, approved by C. Hoffmann and seconded by Jim Kaduk) was carried 6-0-1.

5. Report from Mineral Task Group:

Andy Roberts reported that the task group (Andy Roberts, Andrew McDonald, Ann Sabina, Larry Bernstein) met at headquarters in June (2005) and reviewed 75 potential mineral patterns for inclusion in Set 56 of the PDF. In addition, the task group (minus Andy Roberts) met by conference call (along with Frank McClune, Lisa Lanno and Terry Kahmer) on September 13 (2005) to review the results of an additional 16 patterns. In all, 86 experimental mineral powder patterns will be added to Set 56 of the PDF.

Andy Roberts also reported that he has completed the review of all ICSD calculated mineral powder patterns, up to and including release 2005, and approximately 2100 corrections (deletions and additions) have been submitted to headquarters over the last several years. Many mineral names in the ICSD do not conform to current I.M.A. nomenclature and have had to be revised. Briefly other types of changes are:

•  Deletion of “M” flag for non-ambient phases.
•  Upgrade locality information in comments box (e.g., change “U.S.S.R.” to “Russia” etc.).
•  Confirm that empirical formula reflects correct mineral name as determined by I.M.A.

Andy Roberts also mentioned that he has been given permission by headquarters to do the same editorial review for LPF mineral patterns in the PDF and will give a status report at the next March meeting.

6. Report of Corrections to Mineral Powder Diffraction File:

Peter Bayliss has been reviewing the 2001 edition of the mineral PDF (silver) book and he has encountered several thousand potential changes which should be corrected in the master PDF. Some examples of these are as follows:

•  Chemical formula do not charge balance
•  New unit-cell and axial-ratio data
•  Discovery of new mineral groups and isostructural minerals
•  New measured density data
•  Intensity conversion problems
•  Mineral name changes to comply with I.M.A.
•  Discovery of duplicate patterns
•  Wrong or incomplete experimental conditions
•  Corrections and additions to the structure type
•  Changes in hkl's based on new crystal structure information

It is proposed (again) to bring Peter Bayliss to headquarters in March (2007) to discuss and implement these changes during a Mineral Task Group meeting. A motion (#2 attached, approved by Christina Hoffmann and seconded by Evgeny Antipov) was carried 7-1.

7. Discussion of Mineral Databases in the Public Domain:

Tim Fawcett noted that there are at least four database-sites on the Web. These are not comprehensive in comparison to the entries in the mineral subfile. Some offer links to mineral photos and physical property.

8. Other Business:

The library at headquarters has a dearth of up-to-date mineralogical reference books. We would like to address this inadequacy by recommending the purchase of the following:

•  Dana's New Mineralogy
•  Complete set of the Handbook of Mineralogy
•  Strunz Mineralogical Tables (9 th Edition)
•  Introduction to Rock-Forming Minerals (2 nd Edition)

A motion (#3 attached, approved by Christina Hoffmann and seconded by Andy Roberts) regarding this was carried 10-0.

9. Adjournment:

Meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m.

Submitted by acting secretary Andy Roberts

MOTIONS

Minerals Subcommittee

22 March 2006

Motion 1

The Minerals Subcommittee recommends to the Technical Committee that a sum of up to $1,500 be allocated for a Zeolite Task Group meeting in June 2006 to cover travel expenses. The meeting will be coincident with XRD-I clinic.

Motion 2

The Minerals Subcommittee recommends to the Technical Committee that a sum of up to $3,000 be allocated to finance travel for Peter Bayliss to attend the March meeting in 2007.

Note: As suggested in prior correspondence, the Minerals Task Group expects to receive a list of proposed changes to the Experimental Mineral Database by January 1 st , 2007 . This is to ensure that the Minerals Task Group has adequate time to review the suggested changes.

Motion 3

The Minerals Subcommittee recommends to the Technical Committee that useful books are added to the ICDD library. The books include data to be considered in the database.

•  Dana's New Mineralogy: The system of Mineralogy of James Dwight Dana and Edward Salisbury Dana ($325)

•  Handbook of Mineralogy; full set of 6 books (silicates have 2 volumes) By Anthony, Bideaux, Bladh, Nichols ($600)

•  Strunz Mineralogical Tables (9 th Edition) By Strunz and Nickel ($158)

•  An Introduction to the Rock-Forming Minerals (2 nd Edition) By W.A. Deer, R.A. Howie, J. Zussman ($90, paperback; $170, hard cover)
