Minerals Subcommittee Agenda and Minutes
March 24, 2004
1. Call to Order & Attendance: The Minerals Subcommittee was called to order by L. Bernstein at 2:10 pm and the attendance sheet was passed.
2. Approval of Minutes from March 2003: The minutes from the Mineral Subcommittee meeting in March 2003 were approved unanimously.
3. Old Business:
A. Minerals Task Group Meeting June 2003: The Minerals Task group met in June 2003 to review 124 patterns. A conference call was used in July to review another 15 patterns.
B. Zeolite Task Group: The Zeolite Task Group reported that it had not met this past year, but planned to in June 2004. The possibility of changing the name of the Zeolite Subfile to reflect the non-mineral phases it contains was discussed. The name change is important for the electronic products of ICDD. Names such as microporous materials or mesoporous materials were suggested. The name change was referred to the Zeolite Task Group for further review.
4. New Business:
A. Reviewing of Materials Flagged as Zeolites in ICSD: L. Bernstein reported that a preliminary review revealed that some of the phases flagged as zeolites were not minerals and that no new mineral phases were identified. J. Kaduk asked the Minerals Task Group to develop and implement a plan for review of the ICSD phases flagged as minerals for inclusion in the Minerals Subfile. Some discussion ensued. It was also suggested that the MSA data be reviewed as well.
It was recommended that new mineral phases from ICSD every year would be given to the Minerals Task Group for review. The mineral phases flagged in the ICSD would be held until review had been completed.
B. Other: F. McClune reported that names like emerald, ruby, sapphire, occur in the database often as “common names” or “also called.” After discussion the following motion was proposed.
Motion 1: The Mineral Subcommittee recommends that HQ investigate a mechanism for implementing cross referencing mineral names with synonyms.
