2012 Educational Events Newsletter – Part One
The International Centre for Diffraction Data is having another successful run of Educational Events in 2012, with conferences and clinics educating attendees on the latest topics and trends in the X-ray community. The 2012 Educational Program commenced in May with a weeklong Practical X-ray Fluorescence Clinic. Two weeks later, the 11th Annual Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction (PPXRD) Symposium was held 15 – 18 May, in Sanibel Harbour, Florida. Then in June, ICDD offered the Fundamentals and Advanced Methods in X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinics.
All of ICDD’s hands-on clinics were held at headquarters in Newtown Square, PA. Practical X-ray Fluorescence ran from 30 April – 4 May, and there were 17 in attendance. The knowledgeable faculty consisted of: John Anzelmo, Anzelmo & Associates, Inc.; Larry Arias, Bruker AXS; Richard Bostwick, SPEX SamplePrep, LLC; Larry Creasy, Emeritus, Titanium Metals Corporation; Tim Fawcett, ICDD; Mary Ann Zaitz, IBM Microelectronics.
Instrument demonstrations were also given during the week by: Marco van derHaar and Kimberly Halkiotis, PANalytical; Bob Burton and Brian Werner, SPECTRO Analytical Instrumentation; Rich Phillips, Thermo Scientific; and Kristin Odegaard, Bruker AXS.

One tuition waiver was granted to Chan Park from Seoul National University, Korea. The format of the clinic consisted of lectures in the morning, followed by hands-on workshops in the afternoon. On Monday evening, the week kicked off with a Welcome Reception at the host hotel, the Best Western, Concordville, PA. Also, optional study sessions were held at the hotel in the evenings throughout the week.
The Fundamentals in X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – XRD I was held 4 – 8 June, and drew 31 in attendance. The attendees were guided by the following instructors: Tom Blanton, Eastman Kodak Company; Cyrus Crowder, ICDD; Stacy Gates, ICDD; Soorya Kabekkodu, ICDD; Frank McClune, ICDD; Fangling Needham, ICDD; Susan Quick, The Pennsylvania State University; Mark Rodriguez, Sandia National Laboratories; Earle Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; and Charles Weth, ICDD.

Also, two representatives gave instrument demonstrations, Akhilesh Tripathi, Rigaku Americas Corporation, and Nathan Henderson, Bruker AXS, Inc.
Advanced Methods in X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – XRD II was held 11-15 June. The 16 attendees for the week-long clinic were instructed by: Cyrus Crowder, ICDD; Tim Fawcett, ICDD; Catharine Foris, ForChem Consultants; Stacy Gates, ICDD; Soorya Kabekkodu, ICDD; James Kaduk, Poly Crystallography; Fangling Needham, ICDD; Susan Quick, The Pennsylvania State University; Earle Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; Charles Weth, ICDD.
XRD I and XRD II clinics followed the same format of lectures, recitations and workshops. Each clinic started off with a Welcome Reception at the host hotel on Monday. ICDD granted tuition waivers for the XRD clinics: XRD I – Jason Church, National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, Natchitoches, LA; XRD I & II – Heng Yang, SUNY, Binghampton, NY; XRD II – Shiraz Merali, University of Alberta, Canada.

Overall, clinic attendance consisted of both domestic and international attendees from Korea, Canada, Nigeria and Indonesia, as well as throughout the United States. Our instructors received outstanding feedback from the attendees’ course evaluations; ICDD continues to listen to what attendees desire in our courses and implement their suggestions into our Educational Programs.
The 11th Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction Symposium (PPXRD-11) was successfully held at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa, Fort Myers, FL, USA from the 15 – 18 May 2012. The symposium’s program, which attracted 43 scientists, included a one-day optional workshop, followed by two and a half days of technical sessions, vendor exhibits, and an evening poster session and reception. Attendees came from 11 different countries including: Austria, Finland, Germany, Japan, Korea, Latvia, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
Sponsored by the International Centre for Diffraction Data, PPXRD-11 began with an optional workshop on Understanding Amorphous Pharmaceutical Materials. The organizer of the workshop, Dr. Shawn Yin, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, USA, opened the workshop with an Introduction to Amorphous Materials and Pharmaceutical Applications. Other topics covered during the workshop included:
- Amorphous Basics
- Making Amorphous API
- Ultrafast Lasers for the Detection and Quantification of Trace Crystallinity in Amorphous Formulations by SONICC
- Using PXRD for Amorphous Materials
- Using Thermal Techniques for Amorphous Materials
- The Strategy for Quantification of Residual Amorphous in Crystalline API
The symposium was privileged to have top scientists in the field participate as instructors, including: Lian Yu, University of Wisconsin, USA; Ann Newman, Seventh Street Development Group, USA; Garth Simpson, Purdue University, USA; Simon Bates, Triclinic Labs Inc., USA; and Peter Varlashkin, GlaxoSmithKline, USA.
(PPXRD-11 Session in progress)
Sessions began on Wednesday, 16 May with opening remarks from Chairman of the PPXRD Organizing Committee, Cyrus Crowder, ICDD, USA, followed by six sessions which ran from Wednesday until Friday morning. The sessions featured eight invited talks, including: Lian Yu, University of Wisconsin, USA; Peter Wildfong, Duquesne University, USA; Marc Garland, ICES, Singapore; Maryjane Tremayne, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom; James A. Kaduk, Illinois Institute of Technology, USA; Gregory Stephenson, Eli Lilly and Company, USA; Pingyun Chen, OptiformTM Technologies, USA; and Andre S. Raw, Food and Drug Administration, USA.
A poster session and reception was held on Wednesday evening in the exhibit hall, which allowed attendees to view research displayed on posters, engage in lively scientific discussions, and learn of the latest developments in X-ray equipment and software. Thanks to the exhibitors who participated at the symposium: Bruker AXS, PANalytical, Rigaku Americas Corporation.
