2013 Educational Events Newsletter – Part One
The International Centre for Diffraction Data’s (ICDD) academic program for 2013 has garnered a great deal of attention, both nationally and internationally. In this newsletter, we’ll recap the 2013 X-ray Clinics and PPXRD-12. Watch for 2013 Educational Events Newsletter – Part Two in the next few weeks when we’ll summarize the Denver X-ray Conference and our Specialized Workshops on Rietveld Refinement & Indexing (Basic and Advanced), and Handheld XRF.
All of ICDD’s hands-on clinics were held at headquarters in Newtown Square, PA. Practical X-ray Fluorescence ran from 29 April - 3 May, with 14 participants in attendance. The faculty consisted of: John Anzelmo, Anzelmo & Associates, Inc.; Larry Arias, Bruker AXS; Richard Bostwick, SPEX SamplePrep, LLC; Mary Ann Zaitz, IBM Microelectronics.
Instrument demonstrations were also given during the week by: Kimberly Halkiotis, PANalytical; Matt Kreiner, Oxford Instruments; Rich Phillips, Thermo Scientific; and Marie-Evé Provencher, Corporation Scientifique Claisse.

One tuition waiver was granted to James Griego of Sandia National Labs. The format of the clinic consisted of lectures in the morning, followed by hands-on workshops in the afternoon. Monday evening featured a reception for all participants and instructors.
The Fundamentals of X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – (XRD I) was held 3-7 June, and drew 19 participants. Instructors included: Tom Blanton, Cyrus Crowder, Tim Fawcett, Stacy Gates, Amy Gindhart, Soorya Kabekkodu, Charles Weth, ICDD; Susan Quick, Earle Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; Mark Rodriguez, Sandia National Laboratories.

Instrument demonstrations were given by Lori Hatherley, Rigaku Americas Corporation, and Nathan Henderson, Bruker AXS, Inc.
Advanced Methods in X-ray Powder Diffraction Clinic – (XRD II) was held 10-14 June. A total of 10 participants attended the clinic. Instructors included: Cyrus Crowder, Tim Fawcett, Stacy Gates, Amy Gindhart, Soorya Kabekkodu, Charles Weth, ICDD; Susan Quick, Earle Ryba, The Pennsylvania State University; James Kaduk, Poly Crystallography.

This year, clinic information was provided to participants electronically, on tablets, instead of the voluminous binders historically used. Participants rated this aspect of the clinic very favorably. Our instructors received outstanding feedback from course evaluations as well; ICDD continues to utilize suggestions from clinic participants to refine the clinic programs.
The 12th Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction Symposium (PPXRD-12) was held in Beijing, China at the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 20 – 24 May. The program included two days of workshops, followed by two days of technical sessions, vendor exhibits, and an evening poster session and reception. A total of 46 participants from 10 different countries attended the workshops and sessions. The symposium was sponsored by the International Centre for Diffraction Data, the Chinese Crystallographic Society, and the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

A Symposium workshop, organized by Dr. Shawn Yin of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, USA, included Fundamentals of Powder X-ray Diffraction and Applications of Pharmaceutical X-ray Diffraction. All workshop content was presented in Chinese. Workshop instructors included Dr. Shawn Yin; Dr. Xiaolong Chen, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; Dr. Alex Chen, Crystal Pharmatech, Suzhou, China; and Dr. Baoping Bob He, Bruker AXS, Inc., Madison, WI, USA.
The various sessions featured nine invited talks presented by eight different scientists, including: K. Vyas, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Hyderabad, India; Yuhui H. Dong, Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; S. Nicolopoulos, Nanomegas, Brussels, Belgium; Simon Bates, Triclinic Labs, West Lafayette, IN, USA; Raj Suryanarayanan, University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy, Minneapolis, MN, USA; Katsuhide Terada, Toho University, Chiba, Japan, Deliang Zhou, AbbVie, North Chicago, IL, USA; Xiaoyu Zhang, Crystal Pharmatech, Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. Sessions were presented in English.
A poster session and reception was held on Wednesday evening in the exhibit area, which allowed attendees to view research displayed on posters, engage in lively scientific discussions, and learn about the latest developments in X-ray equipment and software. Thanks to the exhibitors who participated at the symposium: International Centre for Diffraction Data, Bruker AXS, and Rigaku Corporation.
A very special thank you to the Organizing Committee, session chairs, workshop organizers, and invited speakers whose combined contributions made PPXRD-12 successful. Please check the PPXRD website for updates about PPXRD-13, planned for May 2014 in Europe.
