2013 Educational Events Newsletter – Part Two
Rietveld Refinement & Indexing Workshop
The Rietveld Refinement & Indexing Workshop was held 30 September – 4 October 2013. The Basic Workshop took place Monday through Wednesday and the Advanced Workshop took place Thursday and Friday. We had 11 attendees participate in the basic portion, and 10 in the advanced portion. We awarded one tuition waiver for the full Rietveld Refinement & Indexing Workshop to Rene-Fabian Cienfuegos-Pelaes from the University Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
(L-R) Tim Fawcett, Rene-Fabian Cienfuegos-Pelaes, John Faber
Faculty members of the Rietveld Refinement and Indexing Workshop included: Cyrus Crowder, John Faber (Emeritus), Stacy Gates, Amy Gindhart and Suri Kabekkodu from ICDD, and James Kaduk of Poly Crystallography.
Handheld XRF Workshop
The Handheld XRF Workshop was held 15 - 17 October 2013, with eight attendees. The participants enjoyed the smaller class size, which presented greater opportunity for hands-on experiences, coupled with a lot of personal attention from our knowledgeable instructors!
(L-R) Attendees Steve Piec & Jack Li with Instructor Kim Russell
(L-R) Instructor Matt Kreiner with attendees, Beth Price & Sally Malenka
Faculty members of the Handheld XRF were: John Anzelmo of Anzelmo & Associates, Inc., Madison, WI; Matt Kreiner, Oxford Instruments, Concord, MA; John Patterson, Bruker Elemental, Kennewick, MA; Kim Russell, Olympus Innov-X, Woburn, MA; and Mary Ann Zaitz, IBM Microelectronics, Hopewell Junction, NY.
A big change came to the XRF, XRD I & II Clinics, and Rietveld Refinement & Indexing Workshop. Instead of distributing a binder containing lecture and workshop materials, weighing about 10 pounds, we issued electronic tablets, weighing about 1.5 pounds. Attendees thanked us for making the switch.
Here’s a sample of the responses we receive from our attendees through their evaluations:
“Top Notch Instructors!”; “Teachers were amazing -- I highly recommend this course!”; “Well organized!”; “Friendly Environment”; and “Instructors are very patient and versatile considering the diversity of student knowledge”.
