If you were unable to attend the 53rd Annual
Denver X-ray Conference (DXC) here’s what you missed:
The DXC conference was held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort. The conference ran from 2-6 August 2004, attracting nearly 300 registered attendees and over 200 exhibit personnel. The week began with 16 tutorial workshops, on Monday and Tuesday, and sixteen special sessions filled the remaining two and a half days of the conference. Poster sessions were held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of conference week. Judges were appointed each night to select the best posters. Exhibits at the conference ran from Monday to Thursday and 41 companies displayed their various products and services for X-ray powder diffraction and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. To read the full wrap-up of the meeting and for a preview of the 2005 Program, please visit our web site at www.dxcicdd.com. |

For educators and instructors,
ICDD offers a new service, a web-based Powder Diffraction File. This
product is designed for internet access
and includes the modern data mining features and materials analysis capabilities
of the Release 2004 PDF-4 product line. Access will be time limited and
password protected and is solely provided for educational instruction.
The web Powder Diffraction File is complemented by the Educational Resource
Package (separate fee), which provides worked examples that utilize many
database features. A small setup and per student fee is required for
registration on web-PDF. ICDD’s typical license fees are waived
under the condition that use is being provided solely for classroom instruction.
Research applications will be denied. Please contact ICDD for details.
The Educational Resource Package is recommended for instructors trying
to teach basic phase identification while web-PDF is recommended for
advanced training in data mining, pattern simulation and literature searches. |

| IXAS and Advances in X-ray Analysis | Dates to Remember | ||||

Due to a lack of critical financial sponsorship, the International X-ray Analysis Society has decided to stop operations. While IXAS was a free membership internet-centered society, it depended upon financial support from advertisers to maintain web services such as list servers, web maintenance and security software. This organization has formally disbanded. In keeping with the principals and intent of the IXAS organization and its charter, the ICDD has placed electronic versions of Advances in X-ray Analysis, previously available on the IXAS website, in a separate section of the ICDD website. The following link takes you directly to the site’s homepage: http://www.icdd.com/resources/axasearch/AXA_login.php. The ICDD Board of Directors, in cooperation with the Denver X-ray
Organizing Committee and the IXAS Council, decided to provide free
internet access to past volumes, Volumes 40-45, of Advances in X-ray
Analysis. New volumes will be added to the website approximately one
year after a new CD-ROM release. If you have recently registered for
Denver X-ray Conferences, ICDD Grant-in-Aid Programs, Pharmaceutical
Powder X-ray Diffraction Symposia or International X-ray Analysis
Society, you are automatically pre-registered and can use your e-mail
address to login. If other X-ray related meetings would like to post
their papers or abstracts on this website, the ICDD will provide this
service as long as they submit PDF-ready documents. Instructions for
submission will be provided on the ICDD website.
The ICDD is proud to host PPXRD-4 for the purpose of bringing together scientists interested in XRD and other complementary techniques for materials characterization working in the pharmaceutical industry. Call for Papers Deadline: 30 November 2004! www.icdd.com/ppxrd |

| And last but not least, the loss of a good friend.
The death of Howard ‘Mac’ McMurdie at age 99, just a few months short of his 100th birthday, marks the end of an era. McMurdie contributed significantly to many research areas throughout his 75-year scientific career. His affiliation with the ICDD emerged from his interest in the production of powder diffraction patterns in the early 1930s. His work with the ICDD and the Powder Diffraction File (PDF) spanned over 60 years, serving as an editor for the PDF, a Distinguished Fellow, and a consultant to the Board of Directors. A dedicated and hard-working scientist, Mac was also a thoughtful and
generous person who was well-liked. His enthusiasm for life and his never-too-old-to-learn
attitude will linger as an inspiration to all of us. Read more about
