During the week of 14-18 March 2005, ICDD members gathered at the Newtown Square Headquarters office for their Spring Meetings. Discussions of the business and technical aspects of the ICDD and the Powder Diffraction File took place throughout the week. Members, many of who represent leaders in the XRD & XRF fields, also benefited from interactions with peers working in various fields of materials characterization, often in environments similar to their own.

Chaired by ICDD’s Executive Director, Dr. Tim Fawcett, this year’s Plenary Session focused on X-rays – Near and Far. The topics ranged from nanometers to gigameters, taking the audience from atomic scale materials to the surface of Mars.

• Recent Progresses on Exploration and Structural Determination of New Borates
  Presented by Dr. Xiaolong L. Chen, Professor and Deputy Director, Nanoscale Physics and Devies Laboratory, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China
• X-ray Analysis on Mars: An Adventure with Spirit and Opportunity
  Presented by Dr. Stan Mertzman, Dr. Earl D. Stage and Mary E. Stage Chair, Department of Geology, Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, PA

Following the plenary, members and guests were treated to a taste of spring as they visited Longwood Gardens, the world’s premier horticultural display garden, located in Kennett Square, PA. A technical poster session and accompanying reception completed Tuesday’s activities. Watch for the publication of the poster abstracts in the June issue of Powder Diffraction. Mark your calendar and join us for the 2006 ICDD Spring Meetings which will be held 20-24 March 2006.

A European venue was chosen for our fourth Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction Symposium. Held in Barcelona, Spain, 21-24 February 2005, the symposium and accompanied workshop attracted a truly international crowd. Sixty-two attendees representing 20 different countries comprised the interactive audience, whose dynamic discussions proved to be both practical and beneficial. And….Be sure to mark your calendar for PPXRD-5, scheduled to be held in the Philadelphia/western New Jersey area in February 2006.

Access to Advances in X-ray Analysis… On the web and included in Powder Diffraction*

Collaborations previously announced between the ICDD, Powder Diffraction, and the Denver X-ray Conference Organizing Committee have now been implemented. Institutional and library subscribers of Powder Diffraction received in their Volume 20, Issue 1 (2005) the CD-ROM of Volume 47, Advances in X-Ray Analysis (AXA), proceedings from the 2003 Denver X-ray Conference. This group of subscribers now have access to nearly twice the number of annual articles. Each CD-ROM also includes a cumulative title and author index of the AXA series, citing 2,785 articles.

In a related move, past issues, Volumes 40-45, of Advances in X-ray Analysis, are available at http://www.icdd.com/resources/axasearch/AXA_login.php. All ICDD members have been automatically registered for AXA site access. There is no site access fee and the articles can be searched by author and title. Additional volumes will be posted on a 12-18 month delay schedule.
