The 9th National Conference on X-ray Diffraction and ICDD Workshop was held on 14-17 October 2006, in Hangzhou, China. The conference and workshop were jointly organized by the Commission on Powder Diffraction, the Chinese Society of Crystallography; the Commission on X-ray Diffraction, the Chinese Society of Physics; the National Natural Science Foundation of China; the ICDD; and the Beijing Ceramic Society. The conference attracted over 300 participants from universities and industries representing China, Japan, the Netherlands, India, and the USA.
Given by Drs. Ting Huang, James Kaduk, and Fangling Needham, the ICDD Workshop focused on the history of the ICDD and the PDF, the development of the ICDD databases, and their applications in various disciplines. Further, ICDD's products and services were displayed in the ICDD exhibit booth which was attended by Dr. Fangling Needham.

East Pacific Rim - Regional Co-chair, Dr. Nobuo Ishizawa
Several powder diffraction workshops took place in the Eastern Pacific Rim during the last year:
- Presented by SPring-8, a three-day clinic on organic crystals took place in Tokyo in June, and hosted 40 people.
- Another three-day clinic was held at Osaka University in May 2006.
- Sponsored by the Crystallographic Society of Japan, a one-day workshop on medical and protein materials took place in Tokyo, in June 2006.
The 2006 Conferences held in this region included the international meeting, AsCA06, which took place in Tsukuba, Japan, 20-23 November. Approximately 500 presentations were included in the program of this meeting.
Domestic meetings of the Crystallographic Society of Japan, the Ceramic Society of Japan, and the Chemical Society of Japan were also held.
United Kingdom & Ireland - Regional Co-chair, Dr. David Rendle
Three major activities transpired in the last year. The annual spring meeting of the British Crystallographic Association (BCA) was held at Lancaster University, April 4 - 6. Highlights of the meeting included the Phase Identification Modular Workshop and sessions on crystallisation and polymorphism of pharmaceuticals; crystal structure and growth at the nanoscale; and powder diffraction in industry. As a sponsor of the meeting, ICDD's contribution was used, in part, to support student participation. In addition, a full-day XRPD Workshop on Phase Identification was given by John Faber, Dave Taylor, and David Rendle. The workshop covered the history & structure of the Powder Diffraction File, phase identification, advanced phase identification and quantitative analysis, and also a hands-on computer session. ICDD also participated as an exhibitor.

Other events in this region included:
- BCA XRF Meeting at the British Geological Survey was held in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, on 10 May 2006
- BCA Industrial Group Autumn Meeting was held on 9 November 2006 at Pilkington's, Lathom, Lancashire
European Community - Dr. David Rafaja
The European Powder Diffraction Conference or EPDiC -10 was held 1-4 September 2006, in Geneva, Switzerland. ICDD sponsored a workshop, in conjunction with the conference, entitled "New Generation of XRD Databases: Capabilities and Applications, Problem-Solving Techniques." Drs. Timothy Fawcett, John Faber, and James Kaduk were the instructors.
Norberto Masciocchi represented ICDD at the Nationa l Workshop on X-ray Diffraction on Polycrystalline Materials, which was held in Martina Franca, Italy, 26-30 June 2006. The meeting was well attended, about 90 participants, representing industrial, academic and government sectors. The workshop offered an excellent multidisciplinary scientific program including more than fifteen invited lectures, program demonstrations, evening discussions and a few industrial/commercial presentations. The program incorporated the characterization of crystalline solids, polymers and nanocrystalline, and amorphous species by powder diffraction methods, including unconventional synchrotron and neutron diffraction techniques.

North America - Raymond Goehner
ICDD participated in a number of domestic meetings, some of which included workshops.
American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS): In partnership with PANalytical, Bruker and SSCI, ICDD presented a full-day workshop at the 2006 AAPS meeting. Attracting 19 attendees, the workshop was entitled Applications of X-ray Diffraction Analyses for the Study of Pharmaceuticals. Speakers included Timothy Fawcett of ICDD, Holger Cordes of Bruker, Jeff Nicolich of PANalytical, Simon Bates of SSCI, and Raj Suryaranarayanan of the University of Minnesota.
Denver X-ray Conference (DXC) : As usual, the ICDD played a major role in many workshops offered at the DXC. Workshops were taught by ICDD staff and members on the following topics: New Generation of XRD Databases- Capabilities and Applications, Specimen Preparation for XRD, and Rietveld Applications.
Meetings of the American Chemical Society, in San Francisco, CA, 10-14 September 2006, and the Materials Research Society, 27 November - 1 December 2006 in Boston, MA provided ICDD with opportunities to exhibit its products and services.

ICDD's globalization initiatives are realized through the representation and efforts of our Technical Regional Co-chairs. In these roles, each serves as a communication bridge between ICDD, its members, and the powder diffraction community in the area.
Among other activities, the Technical Regional Co-chairs recommend appropriate times and places for ICDD courses, workshops, and meetings, both basic and advanced ones. They recommend new members, Grant-in-Aid candidates, and coordinate local member activities.
We send our thanks and appreciation to all of our Regional Co-chairs for bringing the mission and vision of the ICDD to every region of the globe. To communicate with the Regional Co-chair for your geographical area, please visit: http://www.icdd.com/membership.
