ICDD Spring Meetings - March 2007

During the week of 19-23 March 2007, the International Centre for Diffraction Data welcomed its members and guests to the headquarters office, where it hosted its Annual Spring Meetings. The meetings were well attended; in fact, attendance numbers were among the highest in recent years. ICDD members and guests from around the globe gathered to discuss committee and subcommittee activities, network with colleagues, and meet with old (and new!) friends.

This year's plenary session, held on Tuesday, March 20th , intrigued our attendees with presentations from three guest speakers. John Faber from ICDD spoke about "Exciting New Developments in ICDD PDF-4 Database Products: Total Pattern Analyses." Cyrus Crowder from Dow Chemical focused his talk on "Application of X-ray Powder Diffraction to Industrial Problems." Our final speaker, Michel Barsoum from Drexel University , ventured into theories on the construction of the Egyptian pyramids with his talk, "The Mystery of the Great Pyramids of Egypt, A Partial Solution."

This year's social event followed the Egyptian theme initiated in Dr. Barsoum's presentation. Following the Plenary, members, staff, and guests traveled to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia to visit the Tutankhamun (King Tut) Exhibition. The exhibit featured 50 major objects excavated from Tutankhamun's tomb. More than 70 objects from other royal graves of the 18th Dynasty (1555 B.C.-1305 B.C.) were showcased as well.

On Tuesday evening, a poster session and reception were held at the host hotel where 21 posters were available for perusal. This event provided a stimulating venue for scientific exchange and networking among those in attendance. The plenary and poster session abstracts were published in the June issue of Powder Diffraction.

Abstracts are also available on the ICDD website:

On Wednesday, 21 March, ICDD held a reception, with staff and members in attendance, to celebrate John Faber's retirement. John elected to retire as ICDD's Principal Scientist at the conclusion of meeting week. Friends and colleagues expressed well wishes to John in his new endeavors. However, John will continue to provide help and support to the ICDD and its membership as a consultant, coordinating global educational opportunities as Chairman of the XRD clinics and symposium.

The following awards were presented at the meetings:
•  Sergei Kirik, from the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, Russian Academy of Sciences received the 2007 Distinguished Grantee Award. Dr. Kirik was introduced to the ICDD Grant-in-Aid Program in 1993. Since then, he has contributed over 600 high-quality patterns to the PDF. His primary research interests include inorganic materials: complex compounds, binary, ternary oxides system, super and ionic conductors, ceramics and mesostructured materials.

•  Xiaolong Chen, from Chinese Academy of Sciences, People's Republic of China, received the title of ICDD Fellow. Dr. Chen was recognized for his efforts as Regional Co-chair for China, a position that he continues to maintain.

Long-time collaborator, Toshimichi Matsukura, President of Sanyo Information Systems, Tokyo, Japan, announced his retirement. The ICDD expressed its appreciation with an award of a jade vase commemorating his 45 years of cooperation as a distributor of the PDF and his work in helping grow the powder diffraction community in Japan and the Asian Pacific region.
