ICDD Activities Around the Globe
2007-08 In Review

Thanks to the efforts of our Regional Co-chairs, members, and staff, ICDD was well represented around the globe in 2007-2008, participating in conferences, workshops and meetings. Here are some of the highlights as reported by our Regional Co-chairs at our recent ICDD Annual Spring Meetings:

China
Wanyan Wang, reported on behalf of Regional Co-chair, Xiaolong Chen, on the activities in China.

  • The December 2007 issue of Powder Diffraction contained nine representative papers, selected from the 9th Chinese National Conference on X-ray Diffraction and ICDD Workshop, which took place in October 2006.
  • The 14th National Conference on Residual Stresses and Workshop on X-ray Stress Determination was held in Qingdao City, Shandong Province, 10-14 October 2007. The conference attracted 173 attendees; 78 abstract submissions were received resulting in 33 talks.
  • Featuring 8 plenary talks, the first North-Eastern Regional Conference on X-ray Diffraction was held in Tongliao City, Neimeng, 11-15 August 2007, with approximately 70 participants.
  • Ten selected ICDD web pages have been translated from English to Chinese.
  • Upcoming events for China include:
    • The 4th National Congress of Chinese Society of Crystallography to be held in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, 27-30 July 2008
    • The 10th National Conference on X-ray Diffraction to be held sometime in 2009, which may include an ICDD Workshop.
European Community
Herb Goebel briefly reported on the activities in Europe. One major event was the Size-Strain V Conference, held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, 7-9 October 2007; Matteo Leoni summarized this activity. In September 2008, EPDIC-11 will meet in Warsaw, Poland, where ICDD is planning a workshop.
Indian Ocean Rim
ICDD participated in the workshops, exhibits, and sessions of the recently completed AXAA (Australian X-ray Analytical Association) Conference, held in Melbourne, Australia, 4-8 February 2008.  Suri Kabekkodu represented the ICDD at the IUMRS-ICAM 2007 Conference (International Union of Materials Research Societies – International Conference on Advanced Materials), held in Bangalore, India, in October 2007.
Newly Independent States
Evgeny Antipov reported on the pertinent 2007-08 events in the Newly Independent States (NIS).

  • The ICDD—Ulan-Ude Workshop: New Opportunities in Powder Diffraction was held 25-29 June 2007 near Ulan-Ude on Baikal Lake. The technical program included a total of 173 presentations. Tim Fawcett delivered a plenary talk on “The Growth of the Powder Diffraction File into Advanced Materials Analyses”. Seventy-eight scientists from 13 institutes participated in the ICDD session. Here, Tim Fawcett reported on the development of the PDF, Evgeny Antipov presented the ICDD activities in Russia, and Roman Shpanchenko discussed the powder data technique and data processing for PDF entries. Elena Khaikina, a grant recipient, organized both the session and meeting. Dr. Khaikina is a Senior Research Scientist of the host institute, the Baikal Institute of Nature Management, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Ulan-Ude.
  • The XVI International Conference on Crystal Chemistry and Diffraction Studies of Minerals, took place in Miass, 2-6 July 2007. The meeting hosted 100 participants from various Russian institutes & universities. Roman Shpanchenko lectured about the ICDD databases and attended the ICDD booth.
  • The X International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetalic Compounds, took place in L’viv (Ukraine), 17-20 September 2007, with over 100 participants from Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, USA, Switzerland, Norway and Tajikistan. Andrei Mironov gave the plenary lecture “ICDD Databases – New Potential” and was our representative at the ICDD exhibit booth.
  • The Ukrainian seminar on powder diffraction was held in Kiev on 13 February 2008 with about 50 participants in attendance; Evgeny Antipov lectured about ICDD products and programs.
  •  Plans for 2008/2009 include:
    • The 5th XRD Clinic for industry at Moscow State University, to be held in July 2008
    • The 1st school for “Advanced XRD” for students in Chernogolovka, to be held June/July 2008
    • A school on non-ambient XRD to be held in Ekaterinburg, June 2008
    • Inorganic Chemistry Conference scheduled in L’viv, September 2008
    • NanoForum to take place in Moscow, November 2008
North America

The 2007/08 activities in North America included:

  • American Crystallographic Association (ACA) Meeting, 21-26 July, Salt Lake City, UT
  • 56th Annual Denver X-ray Conference, 30 July-3 August, Colorado Springs, CO
  • Microscopy & Microanalysis (M&M) Meeting, 5-9 August, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
  • Materials Research Society (MRS) Fall Meeting, 26-30 November, Boston, MA
  • American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) Meeting, 18-23 February 2008, Washington, DC

In August 2008, the 57th Annual Denver X-ray Conference will meet jointly with the Eighth International Conference on Residual Stresses (ICRS-8), in Denver, CO.

South America
José Miguel Delgado reported on the South American activities.

southamerica
  • The Latin American Workshop on Applications of Powder Diffraction was held 16-20 April 2007, at LNLS, the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory in Campinas-Brazil. This event also included a Mini Course on Methods of Powder Diffraction. Jim Kaduk, of INEOS Technologies, participated in both the workshop and the mini course, and attended the ICDD booth along with Graciela and Miguel Delgado.
  • A Course on X-ray Powder Diffraction took place 23-26 April 2007, at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil where demonstrations of PDF-4+ were given.
  • A School on Chemistry of the Organic Solid State was held 1-6 July 2007, immediately followed by the XVIII International Conference on the Chemistry of Organic Solid State, 8-13 July 2007; both were held in Merida, Venezuela.
  • O Simpósio Latino Americano de Polimorfismo e Cristalização em Fármacos e Medicamentos was held at LAPOLC, Fortaleza, CE, Brazil, on 30 September – 2 October 2007.  This venue provided an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our PDF-4 Organics database.
  • Looking ahead—SARX 2008: XI Latin American Seminary of Analysis by X-ray Techniques, will be held 10-14 November 2008, in Cabo Frio, RJ, Brazil. Plans for ICDD activity include general presentations including focus on the Grant-in-Aid Program and demonstrations of our PDF-4+ product line.
United Kingdom and Ireland
The activities in the U.K. & Ireland were covered by Dave Taylor, in the absence of Regional Co-chair, David Rendle.

  • The British Crystallographic Association (BCA) Spring Meeting was held 17-19 April 2007 at the University of Kent at Canterbury. The keynote speaker was Robert Snyder from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, whose talk focused on nanomaterials. ICDD supported two student bursaries: Gary S. Nichol from the University of Arizona and Sarah E. Lister from the University of Durham.
  • The first BCA meeting held outside the U.K. took place 2-3 July 2007 in Grenoble, France.
  • The BCA Industrial Group Autumn Meetings took place 7-8 November 2007 at AstraZeneca, in Macclesfield. Talks covering Pharmaceuticals, Rietveld Applications, and Crystallography in Industry were scheduled. 
  • Looking ahead, preparations are being made for these 2008 events:
    • The BCA Spring Meeting, to be held 8-10 April 2008 at University of York
    • Joint BCA/RSC Meeting: “XRF Minerals and Much More!” to be held 14 May 2008 at the British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham
    • XRD & Minerals” will follow on 15 May, again at the British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham.
