News from ICDD’s Regional Co-chairs


Regional Co-chairs, staff, and members have spent the 2008-2009 year representing the ICDD while attending various conferences, workshops and meetings throughout the world. We are grateful for all their time and effort given over the past year. At the Annual March Meetings, each Regional Co-chair gave a report at the Technical Committee Meeting to give a year-in-review report and announce upcoming events.



Xiaolong Chen gave the following report about activities in China. 

  • The 10th National Conference of X-ray Diffraction and ICDD Workshop was held 11 – 18 October 2009 and attracted 260 participants. The conference consisted of a pre-conference workshop on structure and phase analysis of low-dimensional materials, an ICDD Workshop, and a visit to Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, SSRF. A regional ICDD member meeting also took place.
  • Takashi Ida and Xiaolong Chen organized a powder diffraction symposium in AsCA ’09, in Beijing, 22 – 25 October 2009.
  • The 15th National Conference on Residual Stresses and Workshop on X-ray Stress Determination was held in Chongqing City, Sichuan Province, 29 October – 3 November 2009. The conference consisted of 232 attendees and 97 abstracts were submitted.  
  • On 19 December 2009, at South China University of Technology, Guangzhou City, the 8th Guangdong Regional Conference on X-ray Diffraction took place with 72 people in attendance and 16 plenary talks given.
  • In Qiqihaer City, Heilongjiang Province, the 2nd North-Eastern Regional Conference on X-ray Diffraction drew 85 attendees, 19- 24 July 2009.
  • Upcoming events include -
    • 11th National Conference on X-ray Diffraction and ICDD Workshop, which will be held in the Northeastern District in China, Summer 2012
    • 16th International Conference on Crystal Growth; Beijing, 8 August 2010

South America

José Miguel Delgado, the Co-chair for the South American region, spoke of the following events in the South American community.

  • The 3rd Argentinian Congress in Achaeometry and 2nd National Meeting in Cultural Heritage was held in Cordoba, 22 – 25 September 2009.
  • At Escuela Politécncia Nacional de Quito, Ecuador, Professor Alicia Guevara organized the Curso Teórico-Práctico: “Difracción de Rayos-X en Muestras Policristalinas” which was held 24 – 25 November 2009, and was followed by Curso Internacional: “Métodos Modernos de Análisis de Materiales,” held on 26 November 2009.
  • Two new ICDD members from South America, Professor Lauro Bucio and Professor Leopoldo Suescun, attended this year’s March Meetings.
  • Looking ahead -
    • XIX International Materials Research Congress 2010 will meet 15 – 19 August, 2009 in Cancun, Mexico.
    • SARX-2010: XII Latin American Seminary of Analysis by X-ray Techniques will be held 15 – 19 November 2010, Puebla, Pue, Mexico. It will include an ICDD Workshop which will feature a general presentation, Grant-in-Aid information and a PDF-4+ Demo.
    • An International School on Fundamental Crystallography,followed by A Workshop on the Representation Theory of Space Groups, will take place in Montevideo, Uruguay 29 November – 4 December 2010.
    •  “III Simpósio Latino Americano de Polimorfismo e Cristalização em Fármacos e Medicamentos” will take place in Brazil, March 2011.

United Kingdom and Ireland

Dave Taylor gave a report on behalf of David Rendle, the Regional Co-chair for the United Kingdom and Ireland who could not be present at the meetings.

  • The British Crystallographic Association (BCA) Spring Meeting was held at Loughborough University on 21 – 23 April 2009. Nick Marsh of Leicester University was the highlighted speaker, and gave a talk entitled, “Environmental Analysis with XRF and XRD.” An ICDD booth was set up for the event and ICDD Bursary awards were distributed.
  • ICDD’s PPXRD-8 was held in Glasgow, 4 – 7 May 2009.
  • The BCA Industrial Group Autumn Meeting was held on 5 November 2009, at World of Glass, St. Helens. Talks were given on subjects such as Crystallography in the Glass Industry, Amorphous Materials in Pharmaceutical Development, and XRD use in Shell Global Solutions.
  • 2010 events in the U.K and Ireland region -
    • BCA Spring Meetings, at Warwick University, 13 – 15 April 2010.
    • XRF – “Blanket Cover,” 12 May 2010, followed by XRD – Minerals “Between the Sheets” on 13 May 2010, at British Geological Survey, Keyworth, Nottingham.
    • BCA Industrial Group Autumn Meeting, on 3 – 4 November 2010.

Eastern Pacific Rim

Takashi Ida, the Regional Co-chair of the Eastern Pacific Rim spoke about the events happening in Japan. One important upcoming event is the 3rd International Congress of Ceramics which will be held on 14 – 18 November 2010 at Osaka International Convention Center & Rihga Royal Hotel Osaka, Osaka, Japan. A symposium on “Advanced Structure Analysis and Characterization of Ceramic Materials” will be given. Five of the six symposia organizers are ICDD members.


Newly Independent States

Evgeny Antipov gave a report on the important events in the Newly Independent States.

  • The ICDD Workshop at the 5th National Crystal Chemistry Conference was held in Kazan on 29 November – December 4 2009. 122 Participants from 17 Russian and 2 Ukrainian cities attended the workshop. The plenary lecture entitled, “Advanced Materials Analyses Using the Powder Diffraction File” was given by Tom Blanton.
  • The 2nd School on Analyses of Nanomaterials (ROSNANO) met on 28 – 30 May2009, with 100 participants in attendance.
  • Looking ahead -
    • 2nd School “Advanced XRD” for students in Chernogolovka will be held June - July 2010.
    • 11th International Conference on Crystal Chemistry of Intermetallic Compounds will be held in Lviv, 30 May – 2 June 2010.
    • 3rd Nanoforum, the largest scientific-technology meeting will take place in Moscow, December 2010, with more than 10,000 participants.

Indian Ocean Rim

The ICDD’s newest Regional Co-chair, Vanessa K. Peterson, gave a report about events in the Indian Ocean Rim.

  • International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies (ICMAT) was held in Singapore on 28 June – 3 July, 2009, and consisted of 23 parallel sessions.
  • International Union of Materials Research Societies/International Conference in Asia (IUMRS – ICA), met from 28 June – 3 July 2009 in Singapore. Dr. Soorya Kabekkodu, an ICDD staff member, was in attendance.
  • Asian Oceana Neutron Scat. Association 2nd Summer School met in Australia from 18 – 23 August 2009.
  • 2010 activities in the region -
    • Asian Crystallographic Association will be held in Korea, 31 October – 3 November 2010.
    • 7th Pacific Rim International Conference on Advanced Materials (PRICM-7) will take place 1 – 6 August 2010 in Australia.
    • The International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN) occurred in Sydney from 22 – 26 February 2010.

European Community

Matteo Leoni, the Regional Co-chair for the European Community, shared past and upcoming events throughout Europe.

  • Building Materials Analysis was held in Halle, Germany from 24 – 26 March 2009.
  • The International Crystallography School met in Erice, Italy, 4 – 14 June 2009.
  • The XIV International Clay Conference, an international event in the field of clay science and technology, was held 14 – 20 June 2009, in Castellaneta Marina, Italy. The conference drew 753 participants from 51 different countries.
  • A PDF-4+ Workshop was held in Zakopane, Poland, 24-25 September 2009.
  • Looking ahead -
    • The Diffraction at the Nanoscale: Nanocrystals, Defective & Amorphous Materials, which was held in Villigen, Switzerland, met 24 – 30 May 2010.
    • On 27 – 30 of August 2010, the European Powder Diffraction Conference (EPDIC 12) will be held in Darmstadt, Germany.
