PPXRD-8 Summary

X-rays and “Fish n’ Chips” combined to create a very memorable experience at The 8th Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction Symposium, held in Glasgow, Scotland, U.K. The event ran from 4-7 May 2009 at the Menzies Glasgow Hotel and attracted over 60 scientists and 10 exhibit companies.

Sponsored by the International Centre for Diffraction Data, PPXRD-8 began with an optional workshop on Characterization of Pharmaceutical Solids. The workshop began with a talk on the fundamentals of XRD, followed by an introduction to pharmaceutical materials science. Other topics covered were:

The symposium was privileged to have top scientists in academia and industry participate as instructors, including:  Dr. Raj Suryanarayanan, Workshop Chair, University of Minnesota, U.S.A.; Dr. Detlef Beckers, PANalytical, The Netherlands; Dr. Cyrus Crowder, ICDD, Newtown Square, PA, U.S.A.; Dr. Tim Fawcett, ICDD, Newtown Square, PA, U.S.A; and Dr. Geert Vanhoyland, Bruker-AXS GmbH, Germany.

Sessions began with welcoming remarks and introductions from the Principal Scientist of ICDD, Dr. Cyrus Crowder, followed by eight specialized sessions that ran from Tuesday morning until Thursday afternoon. Topics included:

There were nine invited talks from prominent scientists including: Sarah (Sally) L. Price, University College London, London, U.K.; Angela Altomare, IC-CNR, Bari, Italy; Gregory Stephenson, Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis, IN, U.S.A.; Igor Ivanisevic, SSCI, a division of APTUIT Inc., West Lafayette, IN, U.S.A.; Vincent Caron, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland; Jonathan Wright, ESRF, Grenoble cedex, France; Christopher Frampton, SAFC Pharmorphix Ltd., Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, U.K.; Greg Haugstad, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, U.S.A.; and legal expert, Eyal Barash, SSCI, a division of Aptuit Inc., West Lafayette, IN, U.S.A.

A poster session and reception were held in the exhibit hall on Tuesday evening. Attendees were able to peruse the posters and also mingle with vendors to learn about the latest and greatest in X-ray equipment and software. Companies that exhibited at the symposium were:

Only eight years in the making, PPXRD is steadily growing in popularity and interest.  It has become a vital event for pharmaceutical research and development scientists in both industry and academia who have interests in:

The success of the show is due to the commitment and insight of the Organizing Committee who recognize the essential topics to be covered, and find the best speakers to present the talks. Members include:

A very special thank you to all of the Organizing Committee Members listed above and to the session chairs, workshop instructors, and invited speakers, whose contributions forged to make a great show even better in 2009. Thanks also to local contacts, Dr. David Rendle and Mr. David Taylor, who solicited speakers and attendees and informed the local universities about the symposium. Their supporting efforts impacted the overall success of the show.  Join us in 2010 as the symposium heads back to the states and visits the scenic beaches of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
