Research Interests:

Characterization of materials by diffraction and thermophysical properties methods. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and residual stress methods including Rietveld, quantitative analysis, residual stress, instrumentation, consulting, teaching, and editorial projects.

Brief Career History:

  • 2012-Present - President of Applied Diffraction Corporation, a x-ray and neutron diffraction consulting company.
  • 1988-2011 - Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Distinguished Senior Staff Member and Group Leader, Materials Science and Technology Division.  Characterization of materials by diffraction and thermophysical properties methods. Managed three user centers within the High Temperature Materials Laboratory national user facility: high temperature X-ray, neutron, and synchrotron diffraction; X-ray and neutron residual stress and texture; and thermophysical and thermal transport properties.
  • 1971-1988 - National Bureau of Standard (now NIST), Gaithersburg, MD. Post Doc, Staff Member, Deputy Division Chief - Ceramics Division, Group Leader: X-ray single crystal and powder diffraction methods, Standard Reference Materials and reference data, critical evaluation of crystallographic and materials data, crystallographic computing and instrument automation, quantitative phase analysis.
