The Powder Diffraction File Tutorials

The Powder Diffraction File (PDF) Tutorials are designed to demonstrate the following

 Common features and applications
Hints and shortcuts
Embedded application software in the PDF
Use of embedded editorial and quality analyses
Different features in each database

Each tutorial is restricted in size and is designed to take only a few minutes to download and read.

You can use the Side Navigation to view The Powder Diffraction File Tutorials (PowerPoint). In order to view the PowerPoint Slide Shows you will need to either have PowerPoint 2003 installed on your system or download the following FREE viewing software - PowerPoint Viewer 2003 or equivalent.

Using ICDD Software
In order to demonstrate features and applications all tutorials use either the viewing program DDView or DDView+. For our PDF-2 users, our tutorials demonstrate using DDView. DDView, ICDD’s retrieval and viewing software, is designed to make PDF-2 accessible in the Windows environment.  It is licensed separately. For our PDF-4 users, our tutorials demonstrate using DDView+. DDView+ is integrated into all PDF-4 products at no additional charge.  It works seamlessly in the PDF-4+ database and is automatically launched when you open the database. DDView+ provides display, search and data filtering capabilities for the PDF-4 product line.

Application Note: All PDF databases now use a relational database format with a JAVATM interface. This structure facilitates complicated multi-criteria searches, which excel in data mining applications. Embedded software is designed to utilize editorial and quality analyses, facilitate searches, and aid material identification.  The ICDD databases and embedded software are designed to complement vendor software as described below.

Using Vendor Software
ICDD works intimately with dozens of global diffraction analysis (X-ray, electron, EBSD) software developers. The developers are provided instructions on how to access and use the database so that they can use their proprietary viewing programs to access both the PDF-2 or PDF-4 databases. These programs are not used in the tutorials except for some isolated cases where they demonstrate a database application interface provided by vendor software.

Application Note: ICDD distributor software offers an amazing versatility in data application and analyses. In general, these software systems are designed for user speed and convenience, while providing an array of sophisticated applications and analyses. Applications often include pattern fitting, Rietveld refinement, crystallite size analysis, stress and strain analyses, molecular visualization and display, cluster analyses, texture analyses, data collection and processing.
