A curated Raman database has arrived.

With the increasing interest in identifying minerals using Raman spectroscopy, it is time for a unified effort to publish a curated Raman database. The International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD®), with over 8 decades of experience with reference database science and an extensive history with the minerals community, is uniquely suited to this task.

Experts in Raman and Minerals are working in a synergistic way to help build this database. The first published data are now in the ICDD PDF-5+, PDF-4/Minerals, and PDF-4/Axiom 2026 databases. Advanced data analysis tools customized for Raman spectra are available in the ICDD JADE Pro Toolkit. Additional data will continue to be added in all future releases.

“The ICDD Raman File: Design, Content and Applications”

While Raman spectroscopy is based upon vibrational phenomena, it can be used for pattern-match phase identification in a manner very similar to powder XRD – as long as there is a reliable library of reference spectra to compare to. This webinar will begin by reviewing the nature of the Raman effect, the technology of Raman spectrometry, and the experimental approach required for collecting Raman spectra from minerals. A brief review of the history of Raman spectral libraries will be followed by the details of the ICDD Raman File – it’s design, initial contents, and plans for the future. Finally, application examples will be presented.
