PPXRD-16 – XRD Training for the Pharmaceutical Scientist!

The Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction Symposium is designed to create a forum for the exchange of knowledge and cutting-edge ideas among those interested in the combined fields of XRD and pharmaceutical sciences. It typically includes a full-day workshop, followed by several important sessions focused on practical applications of X-ray analysis in the study of pharmaceutical materials. Topics include patent and regulatory issues, formulation, product development, drug delivery, polymorphs, amorphous and nanomaterials, complimentary techniques, and much more.

Since 1999, ICDD has hosted 15 PPXRDs in various parts of the world. The host locations typically rotate and symposiums have been held in USA, Europe, and Asia. The abstracts from previous symposiums are publicly available as well as the presentations, except for the most recent event. The most recent presentations are available to attendees of that year’s event, for one year. After that time, they also  become publicly available.

This year’s PPXRD is a joint meeting with the second SPS-XRPD –  Spring Pharmaceutical Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction Workshop and will be held in Switzerland at the Paul Scherrer Institute from 9-12 May 2019.

16th Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction (PPXRD) Symposium &
Spring Pharmaceutical Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction (SPS-XRPD) Workshop

The 16th Pharmaceutical Powder X-ray Diffraction (PPXRD) Symposium was held as a joint meeting with the Spring Pharmaceutical Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction (SPS-XRPD) Workshop, 9-12 May 2019, at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), in beautiful Villigen, Switzerland.
The joint meeting provided a forum to engage a network of user-facility, academic, and industrial XRD & pharmaceutical scientists in discussions on XRD and related techniques and their application to pharmaceutical science. The Plenary Session, “Intellectual Property Rights, Counterfeit Drugs” was dedicated to the memory of Professor Joel Bernstein (1941-2019), a friend to many attending this meeting and a pioneer in polymorphism studies. Further discussions included recent developments and opportunities in pharmaceutical R&D made possible using synchrotron radiation.

Topics included:
• Intellectual Property Rights
• Counterfeit Drugs
• API Phase Stability
• Qualitative & Quantitative Phase Analysis
• Synchrotron XRPD Beamlines
• Synchrotron Case Studies
• Amorphous, Mesomorphous, and Nanomaterials
• Biological & Biosimilar Drugs
• Pair Distribution Function Guidelines
• Software, Database, Laboratory Instrumentation
• Structure Determination
• Complementary and Emerging Techniques & Methodologies

Taking advantage of our host location, the program included tours of the PSI Large Scale Facilities. Attendees were given the choice to visit the Swiss Light Source (SLS) or the free-electron X-ray laser SwissFEL. A poster session was held concurrently with the technical talks, along with an exhibition of XRPD vendors.

Our sincere thanks to the following organizations for their participation:
• Avant-garde Materials Simulation GmbH
• Bruker Nano
• Dectris
• Malvern Panalytical
• Rigaku

The event offered many opportunities for networking throughout the symposium including some formal social gatherings, such as an opening night reception, and a delightful symposium dinner.
ICDD would like to express its thanks and appreciation to the Paul Scherrer Institute and Park innoVAARE for their hospitality in hosting our event.

Spring Pharmaceutical Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction Workshop

Laboratory powder diffraction is a proven and trusted technique for pharma R&D but synchrotron powder diffraction pushes beyond the capabilities of conventional instrumentation. SPS-XRPD is joining with PPXRD to highlight the most exciting recent developments and opportunities in pharmaceutical R&D made possible by synchrotron XRPD. The joint meeting offers the chance to engage an active network of synchrotron, academic and industrial pharmaceutical scientists, promote awareness of this technique and lower the barriers to access synchrotron XRPD and total scattering techniques.

Visit the SPS-XRPD-1 website to view information from the first workshop held at Purdue University in May 2018.
